Who is Matt Holway?
All who know Matt appreciate that he is not a one-trick pony. Even when young, Matt was the captain of the football team but also embraced his inner geek. After that, he was a brawny do-it-yourselfer who had a long career in information technology. Now retired from the corporate world, Matt is indulging a passion and set of skills that has grown steadily over the years. Loving both hand and power tools, and every bit of wood he can find space for, he is always expanding his repertoire and enjoying new challenges with case goods, furniture, and décor items; large and small. He especially enjoys repurposing old items into totally new ones: a go-to project for him is to take old headboards and create benches or remake an old door into a functioning headboard. But he has also fashioned many beautiful new pieces as well. For example, a magnificent 12-foot-wide ✕ 12-foot-high library shelving unit with a rolling ladder, a sleek walnut trestle dining table that seats 10–12, a delightfully delicate inlaid jewelry box and an innovative “floating-fill” standing knife block.
Matt has learned, and continues to learn, from fellow woodworkers via clubs which he has attended and more recently organized. Additionally, he loves to use his woodworking skills to serve others by voluntarily constructing wheelchair ramps, working with Habitat for Humanity, making toys for Toys-for-Tots, repairing furniture for local charity furniture projects, and building various items around the community such as kayak racks, canoe racks, and “little library” boxes.
That said, Matt also recognizes his community of contributors. His wife Anne is a true partner working with him on myriad projects and fulfilling numerous roles. Additional acknowledgement is due to friends and customers who have been a consistent source of inspiration, support, and encouragement. Finally, Matt recognizes the community of woodworkers who demonstrate a remarkable willingness to share knowledge, experience, and techniques.
