Matt Holway with Holway Woodworking has made three distinct tables for my wife and me. Two were long farm tables made from clear heart pine salvaged from an old North Carolina tobacco warehouse. To widen the tabletop, provide stability and interest, Matt joined the two long-side sections of pine with one long beautiful slab of darker old mahogany. His detailing on each end, again for stability and esthetics, adds a special touch. We have this table on our screened-in porch for all types of meals in all seasons. The dampness has had no effect on the table after several years of use.

The first table Matt made for us was a compound table made up of five identical smaller tables which when joined end to end formed one long table. The individual sections are mechanically fastened together. A simple reconfiguration turns the straight long table into a curved table. Matt went with me to the specialty wood store to pick out the slabs of ipe, great for looks and for use outdoors.

When I wanted a counter-height island to finish our laundry room renovation, I knew I would need something custom made to fit the room. Armed with a picture of the desired style, the finished measurements required, and a source for the legs, Matt returned in less time than anticipated with something that can only be described as a piece of art. The edges of the wood top were custom routed, the shelf below was notched to fit the legs, and the piece is sturdy enough that it can survive the shenanigans of my children. This piece of furniture has already become one of my favorite possessions, and I anticipate loving it in any home I happen to be in for a very long time. Thank you, Matt!

I have had Holway Woodworking do several projects for me from large to small. The first thing he ever did for us was a custom built-in wall of cabinets and lighted shelves that provided a beautiful showcase for all my husband’s artistic wood turning. On another occasion, I wanted a kitchen table of a specific design and Matt was able to produce exactly what I was looking for exactly when promised. I asked for a slightly distressed, painted finish, and he delivered one with a hand-rubbed wax finish that has been easy to maintain in the few years since. On the smaller end of the scale, he did some short, very specific “knock-down” shelving that fits under low-hanging windows—they are quite sturdy and pretty—he chose the wood well to go with my décor.

Matt does an exceptionally good job delivering according to specifications and on time. The next time I want any furniture, I will go to him first.

Matt does awesome work! From repairs to personal handmade items, every piece he has done for us has a personal touch and I would recommend him to anyone! I have a gorgeous cheese and cracker board that I love and will always cherish and also a lovely bench seat for my front porch from an old head and foot board of a bed. He also made a special hanging wall plaque for my husband’s cherished “hubcap” that now has a special place in our home. Every piece he makes is with love and perfection.

Matt Holway with Holway Woodworking has created several projects for us over the years - some are small, delicate and amazing in their intricacy and smooth joinery, and some are larger projects that take your breath away and always spur conversation about who the woodworker/artisan could have been. Matt is fun to work with—his default answer to a query is “Yes! That sounds great, let’s do it!.” And then he puts his considerable energy, enthusiasm, and skill to good use as the project comes to life in his shop. Matt has made two barn-style doors for our kitchen that really are the central feature of the space. He has “helped me” (that means he did it for me) restore several very old clock cabinets for new and unique uses. He helped us build a gorgeous wall of lighted glass and wood shelves to feature and light a collection of antique stringed instruments and one very large African wood angel. However, my most favorite piece is our king size bed headboard created from reclaimed wood (that we chose together) and a very old carved centerpiece for feature. It is nothing short of stunning. We treasure the work that Matt has created for us and can’t wait to see what he’ll be making next.

Holway Woodworking made our barn door dream come true with a custom barn door. We loved the quality of the door and hardware. The stain came out better than we could have ever hoped. It provides privacy for our guests. We constantly get compliments on the craftsmanship of this door! Thank you, Matt!!
